National spoken word / poetry / rap event Superheroes of Slam comes to Leicester this weekend for a heat at 2Funky Music Cafe.
Contestants have three minutes to rock or shock the mic, using original material, and are judged by audience responses and a guest panel. This slam is open to all poets, MC’s & rappers performing acapella, and is hosted by Akshay Sharma.

Alongside winners of other local heats, the winner of the East Midlands event will be put through to a national final at Three Minute Theatre in Manchester on 12 October 2017. As well as the prestigious title, the national winner will receive £250 and an Arvon Course of their choice (subject to availability). Previous winners have included Dominic Berry, Mark Mace Smith, Ben Mellor, Joy France and Paris Kaur.
The East Midlands’ host poet is Akshay Sharma (aka Mr Shay), a beat boxer extraordinaire and a creative force to be reckoned with, who has performed at House of Verse and Open Hype, among others.
Judges of the East Midlands Slam are:
Siobhan Logan, whose poetry/ prose collections Firebridge to Skyshore and Mad, Hopeless and Possible are published by Original Plus. They have been performed at Ledbury Poetry Festival and the British Science Museum.
Michelle Vacciana, a writer and theatre maker whose successful theatre productions include Journey Cakes & Fakebook
Dan Webber, who has appeared at YNOT Festival, Derby Comedy Festival, Bearded Theory Festival, Indietracks and Queer As Jokes in London. He was a finalist in the Poetry is Dead Good Mix It Up Midlands Slam in 2014.
Silvy Kleinmoedig – a poet, writer and book artist. Silvy’s poetry concerns itself mainly with issues of identity and the human experience. For Silvy poetry is the language of the soul and the song of the heart.
Leanne Moden, who has performed across the UK (TEDx, Bestival, WOMAD Festival, Hackney Fourth Wave Feminist Festival) and has competed in national slams (Hammer and Tongue, Poetry Rivals, the Anti- Poetry Slam).
Superheroes of Slam takes place at 2Funky Music Cafe on Friday 15th September from 7pm.
