If Jaws made you afraid to go into the water, then The Shallows probably won’t help, but it won’t be creating any new Thalassophobes either (Yep, fear of the sea).

Blake Lively stars as surfer Nancy who is attacked by a great white shark and stranded on a small rock island, yards from the safety of the shore and with miles of ocean behind her.

Whilst there are times it can feel deflating, it isn’t a bad film by any stretch. The concept is simple and the running time makes for a snappy movie, but ironically what the films lacks is depth.

Lively gives a solid performance, but there could’ve been more here if her character was a little more developed.

The action scenes are tense and gripping but the CGI and score don’t add to the atmosphere in the way that Jaws, with much less technology, was able to.

Any shark thriller is going to be compared to one of the greatest movies of all time, but whilst that’s maybe unfair, The Shallows is still an enjoyable Saturday night b-movie at best.
