With a diverse population and mix of cultures, Leicester has a variety of creative spaces that make it the perfect spot for film fans. From independent cinemas to film clubs and festivals, Leicester will be providing movie-mad enthusiasts with a host of events to get excited about in the upcoming months.

If you like your movies in a more relaxed atmosphere, Midlands Movies themed nights provide regular cult movie screenings in the upstairs venue at Firebug. With fancy dress, movie props and popcorn, these free-entry nights have proved very popular with local crowds. And especially for those seeking an entertaining and social environment away from the multiplexes to watch their favourite films.

Now running for over a year the nights have also helped compliment Firebug’s reputation as one of the premier gig venues in Leicester with music playing a key part in the experience. Local musician Damon Baxter, who has composed trailer music for Transformers: Age of Extinction, Men in Black 3 and Ant-Man, regularly provides exciting new takes on famous movie themes, scores and songs to create an immersive movie mood.

The screenings have no cover charge, however crowds have made welcome donations to fund the event’s continued expansion, with film-related food, competition prize draws and much more offered on the night. Also showcased are local moviemakers – with shorts screened before each main event to promote regional talent and open up their films to a wider audience.

Not stopping there, actors from the films have been sending personal messages before the screenings too. Dennis Hayden (a terrorist in Die Hard) and Ross Harris (Joey in Airplane!) sent the audience some kind words, giving a special feel to each of those shows.

From Wayne’s World’s basement to Jurassic Park’s dinosaur enclosures to Die Hard’s Nakatomi Plaza and Shaun of the Dead’s Winchester Pub, the venue has been turned into a wealth of movie locations. You’re not just watching the film – you’re experiencing them too.

Midlands Movie’s next event is 26th October, with a Halloween special upstairs at Firebug. Keep an eye on their social media for what you can expect.
