Fleabag, the multi-award winning production from Soho Theatre associate company DryWrite, performed by Maddie Rice, has performed to sold-out houses across Australia and is on a limited UK tour since April. Turned into television’s must-see hit of summer 2016, Fleabag began as a one woman show written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and directed by Verity Bargate Award winning Vicky Jones, DryWrite’s co-Artistic Directors.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Vicky Jones, DryWrite said ‘Maddie is capable of breathtaking gear-changes, whip-smart comic timing, and she makes the character all her own. We are thrilled to be working with her again on the role.’
First previewing at Soho Theatre, following a successful sketch night of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s early work, Fleabag made its highly acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Fringe premiere in 2013. Two sold out Soho Theatre runs in 2013 and 2014 followed before a national tour performed by Maddie Rice in 2015. In December 2016 the original multi award-winning production returned home to Soho Theatre to standing ovations and 5-star critical acclaim, the entire run selling out within ten minutes of going on sale. In August 2017 Maddie returned to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for a week as part of the British Council Showcase and again to Soho Theatre for a short run in January this year before she headed off to the Australian leg of the tour across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and the UK dates in Wales, Warwick, Leicester, Newcastle, Sheffield, and Brighton.
In Fleabag the rules are out the window and she’s getting confused. She’s angry, pervy, confrontational, cruel, forgetful, flippant, capricious, but undeniably honest. On the stage over 60 minutes, Fleabag lets us see the world through her eyes as we follow her life, love, loss and heartbreak. This is comedy storytelling at its very best with all the unspoken nitty-gritty of real life. This is the portrait of a girl who isn’t afraid to admit what she thinks is wrong with herself.
Sarah Dodd, Soho Theatre Touring Producer said ‘It’s very special for us to be collaborating with DryWrite again. From Soho to Edinburgh, around the UK, Australia and back again: in presenting Fleabag we’ve been on an incredible journey with them and continue to be exceptionally proud of our part in bringing such a fantastic piece of work to more people, on bigger stages, in more far away places than ever before.’
Fleabag is at Curve from the 16th – 19th May
