On Sunday 8th October, Belgrave Road (the heart of the city’s Asian community) will host a spectacular event, the Diwali lights switch on. The Golden Mile will become illuminated in preparation for Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, and the lights switch on is expected to attract a record number of people, with up to 40,000 people in attendance..
Activities will be taking place from 3pm to 9pm, with the actual lights switch on scheduled for 7.30pm.
Everyone is welcome to join the festivities for an unforgettable experience, which includes a vibrant display of music and dance on the Belgrave Road main stage, presented by the Leicester Hindu Festival Council and Leicester City Council, with support from the Curve theatre. This year there an aerial fireworks display will also take place.
If you can’t make the switch on itself, the lights stay on until Diwali day, which is on 19th October.
From the 6th October, the Leicester ‘Wheel of Light’ will also be back on Belgrave Road so you can enjoy the lights from the comfort of a Ferris wheel.
The Diwali lights switch on takes place on Sunday 8th October.
