2Funky Music Café are hosting a month of special events to celebrate Black History Month.

The venue on New Park Street off Braunstone Gate in the West End hosts local and big named artists regularly and has several club nights a week.

The celebratory month was launched on September 29 by MC and saxophonist Soweto Kinch, and will conclude October 30 with the Gang Starr Foundation World Tour, a performance from a collective of rappers from the US.

Perhaps their biggest event this month will be a visit from Akala, winner of the Mobo Award for Best Hip Hop Act in 2006, on October 26.

2Funky are also launching a new event showcasing the UK’s finest soul, jazz, hip hop, reggae and acoustic acts on October 12, and will feature acts such as Jamie Joseph, Unique and Matthew R.

On October 30, there will be a record fair with a DJ set from 10am until 4pm, selling vinyl, CDs and merch, stall holders can contact info@2funkyarts.co.uk.

Monday 3 October: Shut It Down launch
Launch of monthly night for the dancers! DeeJay Gaz playing the best in Hip Hop, House, Funk & Breaks. Shut It Down brings you cypher sessions, live performances and party vibes.

Wednesday 5 October: Open Hype
Open mic night where singers, rappers and musicians can perform 1-2 tracks, with an emphasis on celebrating urban and Black music genres. Sign up on the night, from 7pm, and bring your own soundtrack. Also featuring a guest artist.

Wednesday 12 October: 2Funky Live BHM Special
The launch of a brand new event, showcasing some of the UK’s finest acts across soul, jazz, hip hop, reggae and acoustic. Featuring Jamie Joseph, Unique and Matthew R.

Friday 14 October: Aba Shanti-I
Aba Shanti-I has been gigging throughout Europe for three decades, and has been a sound system in residence at Notting Hill Carnival since 1993. Don’t miss his all night solo session!

Saturday 15 October: Club Formation
Formation Records showcases the finest drum & bass, hip hop and grime. Club Formation returns with Grooverider; The Godfather of drum & bass. Also witness the return of Spitkingdom with Killa Kela, plus Kenny Ken, Bladerunner, DJSS & more.

Saturday 22 October: Battle Scars – Lyrical Combat
Lyrical Kung Fu! Lyrical battle for poets, rappers, singers and MC’s of all styles. Backed by a live band, heat winners will come away with £100 and a chance to win the £1000 prize in the grand final. Watch them compete!

Wednesday 26 October: Akala, It’s Not a Rumour, 10th Anniversary Tour

Friday 28 October: Lovers Rock Monologues
Lovers Rock icons Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson and Victor Romero Evans come together to celebrate the golden years of this influential reggae sub genre.

Friday 28 October: Leicester Community Radio 1st Birthday Party
Community Radio is taking it back to the Fresh FM days, with a huge DJ line up and the biggest free party this year, as a thank you to all their dedicated listeners.
