A writer from Leicester has won a prestigious travel writing competition.

Farhana Shaikh from Hamilton, beat off several hundred entries in the inaugural Next Great Travel Writer Competition run by Travelex and Penguin.

The panel of judges, comprised of leading travel bloggers, an editor from Penguin and a travel expert was looking to find the most inspiring, original story about a travel experience.

Shaikh’s story, Turkey: a real delight was picked for its creativity, originality and quality of writing and details her trip to a Turkish delight factory.

On her win, Shaikh said: ‘I’m so thrilled to have won. When I visited the Turkish delight factory last summer there was something incredibly special about it and right away I started making notes on my phone. When I saw this competition, it felt like the perfect place to submit what I’d written.’

Travel blogger and judge, Dan Flying Solo said:

“Farhana’s story was the one that transported me the most – I felt like I was there and could taste the flavours of the Turkish delight.”

Her prize includes £1500 to put towards her next adventure and a meeting with an editor from Penguin Books.
