Journeys Festival International is working with Leicester Print Workshop to commission an artist to produce new work in response to the experience of refugees to be exhibited as part of Look Up in August 2018.
Journeys Festival International aims to celebrate and highlight the extraordinary and powerful artwork, music, creativity, culture and experiences that refugee artists bring to the UK. The festival has been running in Leicester since 2013 and now also takes place in Manchester and Portsmouth too. This will be the third year that Leicester Print Workshpo has taken part in the festival, and that their building has been a site for the large scale outdoor exhibition, Look Up.
Look Up is a large scale, outdoor visual art exhibition and was first delivered as part of Journeys Festival International in 2015, showcasing the work of Behjat Omer Abdull on 5 iconic buildings across the city. In 2016, the work of Mohamad Khayata was shown on 10 locations, including Leicester Print Workshop, and last year photographer Daniel Castro Garcia presented work at Curve Theatre; Phoenix; Ramada Encore (projection at night through the Cultural Quarter Projector); Wellgosh; High Cross Light Beams (on Bathhouse Lane opposite Showcase Cinema); Carluccios, High Cross; BBCRadio Leicester; Soft Touch Arts and Leicester Print Workshop.
Look Up will continue in 2018, and we are now seeking proposals from artists with an existing practice concerning image or text based work, who would like to work with artists at Leicester Print Workshop to create new work for a series of non-permanent screen prints that will be printed onto the inside of external windows, using vertical screenprinting techniques.
This process involves the use of several screens, which will be used throughout the Festival to allow participants to be involved in the process of screen printing themselves through a series of public workshops.
Look Up will form a significant part of the Journeys Festival International 2018 and ArtReach and Leicester Print Workshop will support the selected artist to write and submit a Grants for the Arts application to Arts Council England to deliver this project as part of the wider Festival.
The Deadline for Submissions is: 12 Noon, Monday 29th January 2018. Visit the Journeys Festival International website For more information.
