Leicester’s favourite poetry night, Find The Right Words has been shortlisted for an award naming it Best Regular Spoken Word Event in the UK.

Poetry night, Find The Right Words run by local poet, Jess Green at Upstairs at the Western has been going for 5 years and has featured acclaimed acts such Buddy Wakefield, Hollie Mcnish and Elvis McGonagall. The night, which offers 10 open mic spots in front of a friendly crowd has now been shortlisted for Best Regular Spoken Word Event in the prestigious Saboteur Awards run by Saboteur Reviews.

Back in March the public were asked to nominate their favourite poets, books, events and publishers and were asked to  vote in three categories. Over 4000 votes were cast and then the top 4 most voted in each category were shortlisted alongside an ‘editor’s choice’.

Find The Right Words has been shortlisted alongside other poetry events including Verbose in Manchester, Mind over Matter in London and Coventry’s Fire and Dust.

Organiser Jess Green said ‘running a regular event is hard work and the audience often only see a fraction of the work which goes in to making it a success. It’s brilliant to have been shortlisted for something like this, I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who nominated us, it feels like a pat on the back for all the times I didn’t think sod it and give it all up’.

Jess also said ‘I’ve worked hard to create a monthly poetry event which I would want to go to. I think it’s a warm, friendly and professional evening that offers both the chance to see highly acclaimed performers but also offers a platform to local poets to perform their own work. When we first started out 5 years ago we had regular pitfalls – no open micers, headliners cancelling at the last minute, a venue double booking us – but now we’ve been running for so long people take us more seriously now, the challenges are fewer and further between.’

Find The Right Words runs the third Wednesday of every month at Upstairs at the Western. They offer 5 pre book open mic spots (bookable through Facebook or twitter @ftrwpoetry) and a Speed Poet spot where a poet is challenged to write a poem based on 3 themes from the audience.

You can vote for FTRW to win Best Regular Spoken Word Event in the Saboteur Awards by going to www.saboteurawards.org and polls are open until 9th May.
