An exciting new festival is coming to Leicester this Autumn thanks to Leicester Creative Business Depot. Starting in September and stretching into late October, LCB’s first ever Design Season will celebrate the work of Leicester-based creative businesses, as well as individual creatives.

LCB Depot on Rutland Street is home to countless professions and businesses, ranging from video producers to carpenters to wedding shoe designers, and Design Season will host a similarly diverse programme across the two month spectacle. Created by the designers themselves, the event will host architects, digital designers, fashion designers, graphic designers & illustrators, designer-makers, and graffiti artists.

The main aim of the festival is to engage both stakeholders and the general public and get them excited about the many things that the city’s design businesses and designers have achieved, while also raising the city’s profile using design. The unofficial mantra for the event is ‘to support creative enterprises, and enterprising creatives’.

Though for now it may seem a homely, humble event, it is by no means intended to stay that way. By drawing in attention from Leicester City Council, potential investors and big brands, LCB hope to grow Design Season to a festival style event of international repute over the next 3 to 5 years.

“The worlds best festivals are led by the sector they wish to be festive about,” states James Burkmar, the Workspace Manager at LCB Depot, “The season is led by businesses and designers and serves as an illustration of the possible. It will attract the general public but also the bigger agencies and city brands to look at ways to work together to develop a festival event – led by businesses – that is innovative, distinctive and truely world class.”

This idea to expand Design Season above and beyond its current status is not a pipe dream, however. Already LCB Depot have implemented a 5 year plan in order to keep the festival going and reach a wider audience, and it starts as soon as the first Design Season ends, says Burkmar, promising an exciting future for the artier side of Leicester.

Design Season will be launched on September 6th, where LCB Depot will be hosting a launch event from 6pm until 10pm.┬áThe programme for the two month spectacle involves a mixture of exhibition, lectures, performances, and showcases, all concentrating on highlighting the diversity and design across the city. There will also be workshops hosted by companies such as LOOP, an illustration and graphic design firm, and Love Architecture, and there’s plenty of one off events with big social elements too. It really is designed so that there is something for everyone.
