“Extraordinary Art in Ordinary Houses”

A perfect description of what you will find if you join the hundreds of people who have already discovered the fun of following the Art House trail in the Stoneygate and Clarendon Park areas. Situated within the Leicester city boundary on either side of the A6 London Road these very popular but quite different mixed residential areas are within walking distance of each other.

Its popularity and the high standard of work on display are evidenced by the way it has increased in scale. Art House Leicester began in 2008 with only three houses and eight local artists whereas this year’s event includes ten venues with some sixty artists showing their work.

If the scope of the event sounds rather daunting, on Saturday and Sunday you can take a break for tea and cake at Tart House (71 Holmfield Road), where you will also have live music to entertain you. This temporary café enables Art House to support two cancer charities, one based at Leicester Royal Infirmary, and Mind, with over £5000 being raised over the past few years. You can easily take a pleasant two-mile stroll around the properties but there will be a hopper bus operating at regular intervals around the route if you get weary, or too loaded up with art goodies! Donations to charity in lieu of the fare are welcome.

The idea behind Art House Leicester is for the public to see how, in a variety of settings and living styles, original pieces of art can always be accommodated and will enhance any sort of living space.  A wide range of creative talent is represented here. As well as full-time professional artists, many of whom show their work in galleries across the country and have solo exhibitions, other participants fit their creative activities around alternative careers.

Some of the hosts who open up their homes are also participating artists but other householders simply like to be part of the event and are willing to have their homes taken over for the weekend! If you’ve never been before, you can expect to be amazed by the great variety of beautiful work being shown. This includes textiles, jewellery, ceramics, glass, sculpture, wood, enamelling, painting, print making and photography. This really is accessible art with the added fun of seeing inside some interesting houses.

Art House Leicester has a very special and genuinely informal atmosphere where you can buy  work directly from the artists, chat to them about their work and discuss with them their sources of inspiration and working methods. You may also be able to commission personalised pieces to your own specification. The buzz of Art House certainly seems to get the public hooked and sees them returning year after year, as new artists join.

This is an event that also promotes good community spirit and we are fortunate to have it on our doorstep. New for 2017, helping to forge community links, there will be a Cultural Community Corner at 12 Pendene Road. The Stoneygate Conservation Area Society, Leicester Civic Society, Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society and NADFAS will all be represented. Also back by popular request at 12 Pendene Road will be gelARTo VILLAge selling their fabulous gelato and kindly donating some of their profit to our charities. Art House is also proud to sponsor an Art House Prize at Leicester City Council’s Open 28 art exhibition in May 2017.

Art House Leicester runs from Friday 9th June and continues over Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th. Venues are open from 6pm until 8.30pm on Friday and from 11am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday.Full details can be found on the website www.art-house.org.uk.
